COEUR D’ALENE — The Spartan girls varsity basketball team defeated the host Coeur d’Alene Charter Panthers 40-37 Jan. 7. Melissa Krampert led the visitors with 16 points, most of which came during a Spartan fourth-quarter rally.

The home team had led 29-21 going into the final bracket, but the Spartans held Charter to eight points while racking up a game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter. Avery Summers contributed 10 points as well for Priest River, while Liann Kren scored six and Morgan DeMent added four.

The night prior, Summers scored 19 while grabbing 15 boards during Priest River’s victory over the visiting Lakeland Hawks, 42-37. Krampert added 11 points and DeMent scored six.

Lakeland and Priest River were neck-and-neck after one quarter, but the Spartans upped their lead to nine points by halftime. Lakeland pulled within six points in the third quarter but could not substantially eat into the Spartan lead.

Timberlake came to town Jan. 3 and ran wild over the Spartan defense, 70-27.

The home team was without Rachel Akre, Natalie Petit, and Kara Fink, who did not play. Avery Summers scored 17 points and Krampert scored six, but the Spartans were unable to slow down the potent Timberlake offense, which scored in the double digits in each quarter. The Spartans had a hard time scoring, being held to nine or fewer points in each bracket of the contest.
